FBI Reports Over 6,200 Missing Children Located in Past Year

The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced that more than 6,200 missing children have been located over the past year, according to a Baltimore Sun report published March 19, 2026. This figure represents a significant advancement in federal efforts to combat child trafficking and exploitation.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed the agency has recovered the 6,200-plus children, with operations continuing. The number marks a more than 30% increase in recovered children compared to previous periods, demonstrating what officials describe as an unprecedented level of commitment to protecting America's children.

The recoveries come through coordinated operations involving nearly all 56 FBI field offices working alongside state and local law enforcement partners and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC). Recent efforts have included targeted operations such as "Operation Cross Country," a nationwide initiative focusing on commercial child sex trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The FBI has intensified its focus on combating online child predators alongside these recovery efforts. Reports indicate a 490% surge in arrests of online child predators over the same period, signaling a broader crackdown on child exploitation networks.

These operations have yielded results across multiple states. Recent operations in New York located 43 missing children in just three days, while California authorities found 37 missing children in Riverside County during "Operation Safe Return."

The FBI credits enhanced cooperation between federal, state, and local agencies, improved technology, and increased public awareness for the improved recovery rates. The agency continues to urge the public to report any information regarding missing children through law enforcement channels or the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
