SEATTLE (TND) — A new article from doctors at Seattle Children’s Hospital argues that withholding gender-altering procedures from children is akin to “state-sanctioned medical neglect and emotional abuse.”
The article, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, highlights a trend of “transphobia and prejudice toward transgender and gender diverse children” in legislation.
“These legislative efforts operate under the guise of protecting children,” the three authors wrote. “In reality, they punish caregivers and physicians when they choose to support children ... They fuel discriminatory rhetoric, which negatively impacts the mental health of TGD children and imperils their safety.”
The article claims transgender children are denied "access to routine health care that has been shown to decrease dramatically high rates of suicide and depression."
