The City of Yukon has certified a recall petition seeking the removal of Mayor Brian Pillmore after determining it contained the required number of valid signatures under the Yukon City Charter.
The certification advances the process to the Yukon City Council, which is expected to consider the matter during its regular meeting on Aug. 11.
Under Section 41 of the Yukon City Charter, the council must, within 10 days of receiving the petition and certification, approve a resolution or ordinance ordering a recall election and set the election date.
Any qualified individual, including the incumbent mayor, may file as a candidate for the office.
Petition organizers Joe Horn and Allan Lewis called the certification a major milestone after months of organizing, though they emphasized their efforts are not over.
The recall petition received 1,451 certified signatures, just two more than the 1,449 required under the city charter.
“This wasn’t an easy process,” Horn said.
