Ohio House passes transgender bathroom ban bill

In their last act before breaking for the summer, the Ohio House of Representatives passed a bill banning transgender students from using bathrooms that align with their gender identity.

That bill, which passed after 10:30 p.m. on June 26, capped off a marathon session for the House before members go on summer recess, and it wasn’t on the agenda at the start of the day. Republicans attached it to an unrelated bill before voting to pass it out of the House.

The bill bans students in kindergarten through 12th grade, along with college students, from using bathrooms or locker rooms that don’t align with their gender assigned at birth.

Republicans argued it’s common sense but Democrats believe it targets a marginalized group of students.
