Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch held a press conference Wednesday about the incident that left a 2-year-old in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the face.
“They’re just gutless punks who fired from outside the residence into a bedroom window,” Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch said. “So, you know, there was no forced entry or attempt to enter the apartment.”
Burch believes the incident was a gang-related drive-by shooting.
“We believe they’re all teenagers and, you know, to be fair, the target was her teenage son, who’s involved in gang activity,” Burch said.
“And he was, you know, I’m sure the intended target of the shooting,” Burch continued.
No arrests have been made yet, and the 2-year-old’s condition is unknown.
Burch said the boy had surgery and has been treated at the USA Trauma Center.
He said the sheriff’s office will continue to prioritize reducing gang activity.
“This is going to be a priority for our special operations division. And a message to the gang members is, ‘I dare you to pull a gun on one of my guys,'” Burch said.
“Could be the last thing you do,” he continued.
