‘Nobody’s getting out’: Police stood by and unruly street racing crowds grew to hundreds before Broadway/Pike shooting — UPDATE: Victim dies

The Seattle Police Department has declined to provide additional information about the street racing call and directed CHS to the public disclosure process to access its reports on the hours before Sunday morning’s shooting that sent four people to the hospital at Broadway and Pike.

CHS examination of East Precinct radio traffic reveals commands given to officers responding to the street racing scene starting around 1:30 AM to deal with the growing crowds that eventually numbered in the hundreds and the final minutes before gunfire broke out as the speeding cars and onlookers had mostly cleared from the area.

UPDATE 7/27/2023 6:00 PM: Seattle Police says one victim in the shooting has died. The woman in her 20s was reported shot in the head before being treated at Harborview.

UPDATE 7/28/2023 8 AM: The victim has been identified as Essence Greene, 20.

UPDATE 7/26/2023 7:00 PM: SPD has taken the unusual step to release bodycam video showing the crowd as officers arrived at the original 1:30 AM call. “Initial attempts to disband the crowd were met with resistance,” SPD writes. “Officers remained in the area to respond to life-safety events.”
