Memphis elections disputes Democrats' claims of voting irregularities

Shelby County Legislative Democratic Caucus members held an emergency press conference Thursday evening to address reports of candidate defaulting at several different polling locations in Shelby County.

Caucus Chairman and State Representative G.A. Hardaway says that several concerned citizens have reached out because their voting machines defaulted to a different candidate than who they chose.

Representative Antonio Parkinson said some voters selected one candidate, only for the machine to switch the selection to a different candidate, no matter how many times the voter attempted to reselect their choice candidate.

“You should be able to cast that vote as such... it sounds like a calibration issue to me,” Parkinson said.

Shelby County Election Administrator Linda Phillips disputed the claims, providing the following statement:

We are committed to a smooth and transparent voting process. To date, no voting irregularities have been identified. We encourage all voters to carefully review their ballot before casting it. Poll workers are on site at all precincts to assist as needed. Video tutorials are available on our social media channels for guidance on using the voting machines.
