For all of 2025, there were a total of 2,289 confirmed measles cases in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As of July 9, 2026, the number of cases in the U.S. was 2,231, and the 2025 number is expected to be surpassed soon – possibly as early as this week when the CDC reports its latest figures. Before 2025, the last time measles cases were above 2,000 was in 1992when they reached 2,126. In 1991, 9,643 measles cases were reported.
When cases in the U.S. surpass the 2025 figure of 2,289, it will be the highest number on record in 35 years.
“This is a grim milestone and one that could have been avoided, as we have a safe and highly effective measles vaccine that is widely available in the United States. It is tragic that misinformation about the vaccine is getting in the way of keeping people safe.” William Moss a professor in the departments of Epidemiology; International Health; and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and executive director at the Bloomberg School’s International Vaccine Access Center said.
