Michigan had the second-highest unemployment rate among the 50 states in March and experienced the largest increase in the nation in the jobless percentage over the last year, according to data released Friday by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Michigan's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate moved from 5.4% in February to 5.5% in March. Only Nevada had a higher rate in March at 5.7%. In February, Nevada was at 5.8%, and Michigan and California were tied for the second highest rate at 5.4%. California's percentage fell to 5.3% in March.

The nation's unemployment rate has risen two straight months and was 4.2% in March, an increase from 4.1% in February and 4% in January.

“Payroll jobs declined this month led by losses in the manufacturing and professional and business services sectors," Wayne Rourke, the labor market information director for Michigan’s Center for Data and Analytics said of Michigan's trends in March.
