Twiggs County commissioners approved a $5 billion data center project Thursday night despite hundreds of residents packing the meeting in opposition, with the crowd erupting in boos immediately after the vote.

The scene unfolded shortly after 8 p.m. when commissioners voted to rezone 291 acres for the Eagle Rock Partners development. The exact vote tally was not immediately available from the county clerk's office; however, all five commissioners were heard voting in favor.

The approval clears the first major hurdle for the massive artificial intelligence data center that promises to create up to 675 permanent jobs and double the county's tax revenue. However, opponents are already posing potential legal challenges, claiming commissioners violated county ordinances during the approval process.
