It’s not often that Supreme Court Justice’s take the stage to talk about American politics, however, it’s even more rare when they take to the stage and point the fingers at America’s villains. On Wednesday, April 15th, 2026, the Honorable Justice Clarence Thomas did exactly that while speaking at the University of Texas in Austin; doing so on the heels of the 250thanniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Justice Thomas delivered a rare and scathing rebuke of modern-day progressivism, and the ideological force he regards as an “existential threat to the very foundation upon which America was built.” He didn’t mince words; he lamented how the core values cherished by the founding fathers have “fallen out of favor,” warning that the nation is careening toward intellectual and moral ruin if younger generations fail to reclaim our foundational principles.
This wasn’t a nostalgic call for patriotism; it was a blunt indictment of the progressive agenda that has stealthily redefined American society in the last two decades. The consequences from the radical ideology have been profound and far from benign. Progressivism under the guise of equity and social justice promotes policies that almost always reward identity over achievement.
This isn’t about uplifting the disadvantaged; it’s about redistributing success based on group identity and victimhood. This has created a culture that actively disincentivizes personal accountability and excellence, while replacing ambition with grievance. When you dictate how people should think rather than encourage independent thought, you kill initiative and innovation; the two engines that have powered America’s rise to glory.
Justice Thomas nailed it when he said, “If we don’t stand up and take ownership of our country, and take responsibility for it, we are slowly letting others control how we think and what we think.” He understands that the poison of progressivism has seeped into education, the media, and government institutions; areas once devoted to fostering critical thinking and civic pride, have now been transformed into echo chambers of ideological conformity.
Progressivism demands unquestioning acceptance of its worldly view, while punishing dissent and labeling it as hate or ignorance. It preys on the conscience of good people, turning them into blind useful idiots. Its embrace of identity politics and intersectionality fractures national unity by pitting groups against one another. Instead of promoting a shared identity as Americans, it focuses on dividing citizens into classes of oppressors and oppressed.
This brand of divisive tribalism undermines social cohesion and breeds resentment within the population, making it easier for political opportunists to manipulate public sentiment and weaken constitutional governance. We see this play out in blue cities across the country where progressive leadership has the majority. Recent elections in New York and Seattle’s mayoral races accentuate this very point.
Justice Thomas’s speech also highlighted what he called a “generational crisis.” He spoke how young Americans are being educated in an environment that increasingly rejects the principles of free inquiry and robust debate. Instead of encouraging students to grapple with complex ideas from independent judgments, colleges push ideological conformity masked as diversity and inclusion.
In doing so, this distorts history, censors opposing viewpoints, and conditions America’s youth to accept a world where authority dictates the truth, rather than evidence or reason. The long-term consequence is a citizenry that is ill-prepared to defend liberty or even comprehend its true value.
Justice’s Thomas’s blistering critique shines a harsh light on these realities, holding progressivism accountable for its dangerous trajectory. He calls on America to awaken from the complacency slumber that has allowed these currents to take hold unchallenged. He makes the choice abundantly clear; either revive commitment to America’s founding ideals or surrender to a future where the nations identity is completely fragmented, unrecognizable, and hollowed out.
The real danger here isn’t some external enemy but the internal rot that corrodes civic virtue and national coherence from within. Justice Thomas rightfully reminds us that safeguarding liberty requires vigilance, courage and, above all, reclaiming ownership of our country, intellectually, morally, and politically. He also reminds us that the framework for repair already exists within our Declaration of Independence. It simply requires reading the first few paragraphs from time to time.
