As we approach Christmas, I often wonder what this time of year means to the people around me. Christmas has become so commercialized in our culture; it seems the essence of the day has gotten lost. As Christians we believe in celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We rejoice and give thanks for His eternal gift of love and all it encompasses.
Christmas has become a part of our world’s history. The Christmas story has inspired people throughout the centuries to love and care for one another. The power of the Christmas message reaches across borders, races, and religion. It tells us that we are loved by God and that God loves us. This beautiful message of love has propelled itself throughout the ages.
As Christians, we are all called to love both God and our neighbor. Christianity throughout the world is the religion of the poor and powerless, the marginalized and downtrodden, and all who seek redemption. In a world that seems to get darker by the day, we need to be the light which continues to illuminate the future.
The story of Jesus’ birth is a beautiful and incredible account of love. Jesus came to this earth to show us the love of God. Christianity has become a worldwide faith because Christ was born among us. “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but have eternal life.”
It could be this Christmas that we are reminded of the true meaning of Christmas, and how it is possible to love one another no matter what differences we might have. So, let’s look for those in need who may be feeling unloved and remember we can show them love, help them, and fill their hearts with the essence of Christmas. This could be the true gift that heralds the new year.
This year, we need to be more than ready to share the gift of love - whether it’s to family and friends, to those around you, or even just a stranger. With it comes plenty of giving and receiving. We are happy to see people of all sorts of faiths and beliefs spreading joy at this time of year. This is truly the gift that keeps on giving; and remember, the best gifts in life are those given unconditionally and without expectation. ◆
From my family to yours, Merry Christmas and may God bless all of you.
