Texas Democrat detained for the third time

A Texas Democrat running for re-election this November has found herself in a bit of trouble once more. Early on Saturday, Texas City police responded to reports of a vehicle idling in the left lane of Highway 3.

At around 1:30 a.m., officers discovered Harris County Treasurer Carla Wyatt (D) asleep in the driver’s seat of her car, which had its engine running and hazard lights flashing. Details from court documents reveal that an officer had to open the door and turn off the ignition before waking her up.

When questioned about her location, Wyatt initially responded that she was “in heaven” and believed she was in Houston—despite that being over 60 miles away. Later, she mentioned being in town for a meeting scheduled in Galveston that morning. Her story varied as she first claimed to have consumed one glass of wine the previous night but then adjusted it to two glasses.

Officers noted the smell of alcohol and observed that Wyatt appeared unsteady on her feet. She expressed concerns about taking a sobriety test, citing a past leg injury.

Ultimately, Wyatt was charged with driving under the influence, categorized as a class B misdemeanor. She was released on bail set at $3,000 and has a court appearance scheduled for June 26.
