The legislation, which would ban commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms, most standard capacity magazines and mandate locked firearm storage, was coined "New York style" by the NRA. It’s a nod to the fact that the state has some of the toughest gun laws in the country after passing the NY Safe Act in 2013.
Pressure is mounting on lawmakers to take action in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting in which 17 people were killed. Students across the country held a walkout on March 14, and lawmakers in Washington are urging legislation to close gaps in the federal background check system.
The NRA asked supporters to contact their legislators to vote "no" on the amendment, which would also have a 10-day delay for gun purchases. It expects a vote to occur on March 20.
