A Rutherford County Tennessee landfill known as “Mount Trashmore” has become the focus of a statewide debate about how to accommodate increasing waste needs related to the state’s growing population.
The dispute over Middle Point Landfill pits the facility’s owner, BFI Waste Water System, against residents and politicians in and around Murfreesboro. A corporate subsidiary of Republic Services, Middle Point in 2021 sought permission to extend the life of the 207-acre site by another 99 acres.
