The conservative nonprofit filed an administrative complaint on Feb. 3 accusing school systems in Alexandria City and Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties of violating Title IX and an executive order from President Donald Trump by allowing students to use locker rooms and bathrooms based on gender identity.

The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights (OCR) confirmed the investigation in a letter on Feb. 12, according to the group. A page on the office's website that typically displays pending cases has not been updated since Jan. 14.

In its letter to the AFL, OCR said it acknowledged the complaints against the schools' transgender policies. The office's role includes enforcing a federal mandate that "prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."
